MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The Memphis Police Department has charged a man who was responsible for a deadly car crash on I-40 W that took place in May.
The crash took place on May 31 at 3:15 p.m. at I-40 W and Hollywood Avenue.
Robert Carmack, 26, was speeding in a Ford F350 west on I-40W when he flew past a flashing TDOT sign of an upcoming construction zone.
The zone was around 25 yards before he ‘recklessly and rapidly’ approached decelerated traffic, according to MPD.
Carmack rammed into a Honda CR-V where Tonya Cannady and her two sons, Barry and Scot were inside the vehicle.
Due to the high impact of the crash, a chain reaction occurred after the Ford crashed into the Honda.
Cannady’s vehicle crashed into the rear of a Lexus LS460, which then rear-ended a Hyundai Elantra, which then was rammed into a Kenworth T680 TT.
Cannady and her two sons were pronounced dead on the scene when first responders arrived.
The driver in the Lexus was transported to St. Francis Bartlett in non-critical condition.
The Honda that contained Cannady and her sons was dragged for at least 50 yards by Carmack’s Ford, leading the Honda to burst into flames.
Carmack was charged with the following:
- 3 counts of Vehicular Homicide
- 4 counts of Aggravated Assault
- 1 count of Reckless Driving
- 6 counts of Reckless Endangerment
- 1 count of Failure to Exercise Due Care
