PEARL, Miss. — A Mississippi man who was the subject of a nationwide manhunt, who later pleaded guilty to the shooting death of his girlfriend and to shooting a jogger in Rankin County, has died in prison. Alex Deaton, 36, was found dead Saturday in a cell at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility. Deaton was sentenced in 2018 to life in prison for the 2017 death of his girlfriend, Heather Robinson, who was found strangled at her apartment.
Deaton then went on a crime spree, stealing Robinson’s vehicle before shooting a jogger. Deaton then drove to Neshoba County, where he was accused in the shooting death of Brenda Pinter, 69, at a church.
After the Mississippi shootings, police said Deaton carjacked a couple in New Mexico. Deaton later surfaced in Pratt, Kansas, where he was convicted of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated robbery in a shooting that injured a convenience store clerk. Deaton was sentenced to more than 17 years in prison in that case. In addition to the life sentence, Deaton was also sentenced to 10 years for vehicle theft and 30 years for the drive-by shooting that injured the jogger. An autopsy has been ordered, according to Rankin County Coroner David Ruth.
