NEW YORK — The funeral for fallen NYPD officer Didarul Islam will take place Thursday at a mosque in the Parkchester section of the Bronx, where he lived.
Islam is one of four people killed when a gunman entered a Midtown Manhattan office building on Monday, wearing body armor and opened fire.
In accordance with his faith, Islam’s body is being prepared for a line-of-duty funeral.
Separate viewings for men and women will be held Thursday morning.
A dignified transfer of Islam’s body from the medical examiner’s office to Parkchester Jame Masjid took place Tuesday, as fellow officers gathered to honor his memory. Traffic was held on FDR Drive to clear the roadway for the solemn procession.
Members of the NYPD and FDNY lined the streets to salute Islam.
Shannon Sohn has the details of the dignified transfer.
He is the first NYPD officer of Bangladeshi descent to be killed in the line of duty.
Islam was the father of two young boys and was married. His wife is pregnant and is due with their third child next month.
He was assigned to the 47th precinct at a stationhouse in Baychester, where purple bunting hangs. He was on the force for three and a half years.
At the time of the shooting Monday, Islam was off duty but working a private security detail assignment.
He was in uniform, which would have included a bullet-resistant vest, and carrying his service weapon.
An autopsy report says Islam suffered wounds to his torso and arm after a gunman ambushed him and others in the lobby of an office building on Park Avenue in Midtown.
“A hardworking cop who devoted his life working for this city. He started as a school safety officer and then his dream was to become a police officer and that’s what he did,” PBA President Patrick Henry said. “He came on to this department and devoted his life and he was about family.”
A private tribute and prayer service for Officer Islam will be held at the mosque Thursday afternoon.
Neighbors have been paying respects to his family in Parkchester, home to a growing Bangladeshi community.
