NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) – Police say a man and his 13-year-old son were found dead in a Nicholasville hotel room Tuesday in what investigators believe was a murder-suicide.
According to the Nicholasville Police Department, officers were called to the Comfort Inn on All Star Way around 1 p.m. after hotel staff reported that two guests had not checked out by the noon deadline. When staff entered the room, they found both people unresponsive and called police.
Police say officers found 57-year-old Joseph Kiser, of the Raleigh, North Carolina area, dead along with his 13-year-old son. Police say Kiser died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and believe he shot his son in the back of the head before turning the gun on himself.
The boy has not yet been officially identified, but police say he was reported missing in North Carolina on Monday. Hotel staff told investigators the two checked in on July 23.
Police say they are still working to determine what led to the incident. Electronic devices were seized as part of the investigation, but police say no note was found, and there had been no communication suggesting any plans of violence.
Police say it remains unclear if Kiser had legal custody of his son.
The investigation is ongoing.
